Obituary

Rosa Nell Hammer, age 106, went to be with our Lord on September 14, 2026. She was born in 1919 to I.D. Gordy and Eleanor Thompson Gordy in Electric Mills, Mississippi.

Having grown-up during the depression, her family farm was without electricity until she was a teenager. Nell saw how life grew from no electricity in most homes to man-in-space and the cell phone!

During World War II, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” in Akron, Ohio, for the war effort and met Harvey P. Hammer….they married in 1943. During their time in the Air Force, they were blessed with four children. Being stationed in Japan, was just one highlight in the life of this young family. In 1955 they settled in Hialeah, Florida.

After the children were grown Nell lived in Miami Lakes where she became a realtor. She worked for many years for Keyes Realty and for the Graham Company. As the demographics changed in the Miami area, she paired up with Allan Pelaez, who spoke both Spanish and English. Together, they became top sellers and friends for the rest of her life. She was 99 years old when she sold her last house and finally retired from real estate!

During her busy life after raising her family, Nell became a skilled artist in stained glass, and she was an expert in raising orchids. At one point, her orchid collection numbered in the hundreds! The R. F. Orchids even named an orchid after her called the Brassica Laelia Cattleya Nell Hammer.

Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Harvey Hammer, her daughter Glenda Weeks and her son Brian Hammer. She is survived by her son Harvey Brent Hammer and her daughter Candy Meeks.

Grandchildren include Nicholas Hammer, Kelly Hammer, Mike Weeks, Wade Weeks, Patricia Hammer, Pamela Michno and Angela Curlee. Her great-grandchildren are Nathan Weeks, Katie Weeks, Kyleigh Wertz, Dakota Leathermann, Harvey Michno, Quinn Michno and Delilah Michno.

The family would like to offer special thanks to those who cared for Nell during her final months: Elayne Enamorado, Yanelle Alfonso, Julia Fuentes, Anna Pereira, and the staff at Catholic hospice.

Visitation and a celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2026, at 6PM at Vista Funeral Home in Miami Lakes.

A graveside service will follow at Boyd Cemetery in Livingston, Alabama, overseen by Bumpers Funeral Home. Nell’s desire was to be buried in the family cemetery where, as a small girl, her parents took the family by buggy, pulled by a mule, to clean the gravestones and remember her deceased relatives on Memorial Day.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Rosa Nell Hammer, who has entrusted Vista Funeral Home with the honor of handling her final arrangements.
