Roberto Valdes, 90, of Doral, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025. Born on July 23, 1934, in Bauta, Cuba, he embodied the spirit of determination and strong work ethic that would define his life's journey.
In 1968, amid the political upheaval following Castro's rise to power, Roberto made the courageous decision to leave his homeland, establishing new roots in Hialeah, Florida. Through hard work and perseverance, he built a multifaceted career that served his community. Upon arriving in the US, he worked multiple jobs simultaneously as a mechanic at a service station and busman at a hotel banquet hall. Later, he worked for the City of Hialeah Public Works Department. Together with his beloved wife Mercy, he ran a children's school bus service, ensuring the safe transportation of countless young students over the years.
Roberto's story is a testament to the American dream, transforming the challenges of an exile into opportunities for success and community service. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit touched many lives in both Hialeah and Doral, where he became a respected figure in the community.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his devoted wife Mercy, daughters Caridad and her husband Larry, Ivonne and her partner Mike, and sons Ernesto (wife Lissie), Alex, and Eduardo, in addition to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through their lives and the many lives he touched through his years of service to the community.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Vista Memorial Gardens.
