Oscar Jose Hernandez, born in New York, May 2nd, 1930 to Maximiliano E. Hernandez
and Victoria Maria Ybarra left this earth peacefully on November 26, 2025. He is survived
by his wife, Sylvia, four sons, Alexis, Adrian ( Courtney), Rene (Nadine) and David, as well
as eight grandchildren, one niece Cindy, one nephew Greg, 2 stepdaughters Amy and Lisa
and several cousins.
As a young man, he attended and graduated from Belen school in Havana and graduated from Manhattan Aviation
School in New York. His love all his life was for airplanes. He built several plane models, studied
airplane maintenance and became a pilot having received his first Solo fight Certificate on
February 6, 1949. He flew small airplanes from the United States to South America as his
first job as a pilot. Some of these trips as far as Argentina.
He joined the Naval Reserve and served for four years. On December 28, 1951, he joined
the Army during the Korean War and was sent to Germany where he repaired airplanes and kept our military flying.
He was honorably discharged on December 15,1954.
He was employed by Pan American Airlines for 27 years, later working for Lockheed.
He was an animal lover and especially loved cats, 2 of which he "adopted"....."Missy" and "Cookie" . In later
years he enjoyed sitting on our back patio to watch the squirrels, birds, ducks and even the iguanas.
Most importantly, he was a gentle soul and loving husband. His sense of humor stayed with him to the
end and he never complained about anything.
Those of us who had the great privilege of knowing him will miss him, his kindness to all and his love
of life, saying always "I always feel lucky"
