Mirian Acosta

On Tuesday, December 29, 2020, Miriam Reyes Acosta, committed wife and mother of two,
passed away at the age of 81. Miriam was born on April 1, 1939 in Holguin, Cuba to Fermin and
Glor Reyes. A diligent student, she received her doctorate of pharmacy in Cuba and later when
arriving to the United States she revalidated her degree at the University of Miami. Her greatest
accomplishment, however, was to her lifetime love, Carlos Acosta, who she met at the age of 9
and with whom she was with until her last day. Carlos and Miriam married in Cuba on
12/10/1960 and happily celebrated their 60 year anniversary this past December. Together,
they raised a son and a daughter, Carlos and Miriam.
Miriam had a passion for her studies and career. In the 1950s, as a woman in Cuba, she was
accepted to the University of Pennsylvania. She forewent this opportunity so as not to be away
from her love, Carlos. Years later, after arriving to the United States, and all while running a
household and raising two children, she revalidated her doctorate in pharmacy. This example
left a lasting impression on her children, modeling independence, perseverance and a strong
work ethic. She was also a pioneer in her own right, dreaming of becoming the first to receive a
pancreas transplant for diabetes and working towards researching a cure. More than anything,
though, Miriam dedicated her life to her husband, Carlos, and her family. She worked tirelessly
at her business "Miriam Pharmacy" and it was her joy and passion to help the community. She
loved her grandchildren and took them in the summers to teach them how to be pharmacists.
The weekends were spent in the Florida Keys, fishing, cooking and spending time with the
family.
Miriam was preceded in death by her father, Fermin, and her mother, Glor. She is survived by
her husband, Carlos, her two children, Carlos and Miriam, her brother Domingo and her
grandchildren, Victoria, Erika, Nicholas and Jennifer.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 9 th , 2021 at Vista Memorial from 9:30 am –
1pm. Donations to the American Diabetes Association or St. Jude's Hospital, two causes for
which she was passionate, may be made in her memory.
