Obituary

Miguel Cortizó, 90, resident of the Country Club of Miami, passed peacefully Wednesday September 16, 2026 with his wife Tita and his family by his side.

Miguel’s life could be best measured in the adventures, jokes, and love he generously shared with his friends and family.

His adventures began on September 29th 1935, born to Avelino and Francisca Cortizo, in Mariel, Cuba. Miguel learned the ropes of the family businesses during his youth in Cuba, a skill he later put to great use after immigrating to the United States in 1961 with the rest of his family to escape the newly established communist regime. He used his entrepreneurial skills to start a successful furniture business, Florida Upholsterers Frames, which got the entire family involved in the business at one time or another.

Endlessly curious and open to adventures, Miguel explored a number of continents and countries alongside his wife and family. They visited the United States, Europe and Latin America on numerous exciting journeys. Miguel was also an avid fisherman, diver, and lover of the sea, a passion he shared with his family and friends year after year, not only over summers in the Florida Keys, but also in his day to day life.

Miguel is survived by his wife Tita Cortizo and his three children Iliana Portela, Leticia Cortizo-Caro and Miguel Jr. Cortizo and his beloved grandchildren Nickolas Cortizo, Christopher Portela, Victoria Portela, Jacob Caro and Dylan Caro.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday September 23 from 6pm to 10pm at Vista Memorial Gardens and the Burial on Thursday September 24th at 10:30am Sharp.
