Manuel Lazaro Mantrana

Manuel Lazaro Mantrana was born on September 28, 1962 in Havana, Cuba to the late Israel Mantrana and Aurora Elena Garcia.  He departed this life on April 21, 2021 at his home.

At an early age, Manny fell in love with the game of baseball, starting little league at

Shenandoah Park, by entering the Carlos Pasqual's baseball academy and went on to play at Grapeland Park, in his home town of Miami, Dade County, Florida.

Manny graduated from Miami Jackson High School, in 1981 and continued his studies in Miami Dade Community College.  Manny then transferred to Middle Georgia State University.  In 1983 he led his mighty Warriors to an NJCAA World Series and was named MVP.

His passion for baseball did not stop there.  He then played two seasons for  the  Louisiana State University.  Eventually, then signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets organizations.

Upon the ending of his baseball career, Manny coached for Miami Jackson High School, Miami Dade Community College.  Recognizing his abilities, he was hired by St. Thomas University as the head coach of the Bobcats, leading them to three NAIA World Series.  He  was named Southeast Coach of the year and Florida Sun Conference Coach of the year, three times.   His accomplishments earned him  an induction into their Hall of Fame.

After his tenure with St. Thomas University, his baseball talent took him to University of  Texas-Pan American in  2009, as head coach leading them to the Great West Conferences for four seasons.

Manny's love for his players, his skills on the baseball field, his contributions to the baseball family will be truly a great loss for the baseball community.  I can see him playing baseball in heaven.

Manny was united in marriage with Marlena Schwartz Mantrana.  And from this union, Maxine Hunter Mantrana was born.  He leaves his cherished memories, devotions, accolades and attributes to all those that loved him.

Services will be held at Vista Memorial Gardens, located at 14200 NW 57 ^th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33014, Friday, April 23, 2021 from 6:00p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
