Luis Mario Gonzalez

Luis Mario "Mayito" Gonzalez peacefully departed this life on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at the age of 86. He lived a beautiful and fulfilled life and leaves a rich legacy of love, kindness, and friendship. Mayito was born in Aguacate, Cuba on April 3, 1934, the son of Vicente and Maria Trinidad (Rodriguez) Gonzalez.

Luis Mario immigrated to the United States in 1955 and settled in Miami, Florida where he formed rich friendships. He was the first in his family to leave Cuba. In 1956, he returned to his homeland to marry his wife and brought her to Miami. In the early 60s, he helped dozens of family members to immigrate and settle in the Miami area, most of them passing through his home before getting settled. During his early years in Miami, he worked in a shoe factory for over 13 years prior to starting a business. He founded Luis Mario Gonzalez Tax Services in Hialeah and helped the Cuban community with income taxes and helped create businesses for immigrant Cubans who were starting their lives in Miami. He also was instrumental in creating and developing the mountain cabin community of Piney Creek, North Carolina, which was a heart project. He subdivided lots, sold them to numerous friends and family, and made cherished memories for so many. North Carolina was a second home, but most importantly a place to retreat with those he loved. He was at his happiest spending time with large groups of friends and family - the more the merrier. Mayito was a friend to all and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was the definition of happy, go-lucky and permanently wore a smile on his face. His love and joy was contagious and will forever remain with not only his family and close friends, but everyone who had any contact with him.

He is survived by his wife, Nereida, his sons, Richard and Mario, his daughter-in-law, Anabel, his grandchildren, Isabelle and Nick, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was godfather to many, but affectionately known as Padrino to most of his nieces, nephews, and others who he touched.

Mayito was a man of faith, a practicing Catholic all his life, and most recently a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
