Juan Jose Curbelo was born on November 24, 1937, in La Habana, Cuba. Juan was the ninth of ten children born to Maria and Matias Curbelo. As a young man, he followed his older brother and immigrated to the United States to settle in New York City. He met his future wife, Zoila, in the same NYC apartment building. They married in 1965 at Saint Elizabeth’s Church and shortly thereafter started their family. Guided by a desire for better economic opportunities for his family, Juan moved his wife, Zoila, and their three young children down to Miami Beach, Florida.

He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph’s Church. When his children attended St. Joseph’s School in the 1970s, he served as one of the Bingo Captains every Tuesday for St. Joseph’s Parish.

From 1973 until his retirement in 2000, Juan worked at Southern Wine and Spirits, where he was a valued member of the shipping and receiving department.

Though he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Zoila, Juan’s legacy lives on through his children: Maria (from a previous marriage), Rosalia, Julia, and Juan Matias; his sister, Maria Isabel; and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Juan was a man of simple joys and great passions. He loved listening to the news on the radio and music on his record player. He watched baseball during the MLB season and enjoyed gathering with friends and family over a game of dominoes. He was surrounded by people who loved and respected him, and he will be missed very much.
