Obituary

Jorge Luis Calvo Tapia, of Hialeah, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born in Arcos de Canasí, Cuba, on February 14, 1934, Jorge Luis lived a long and meaningful life filled with perseverance, sacrifice, and deep love for his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Zoraida Rodriguez Pacheco, whose passing in 2004.

Known affectionately by his middle name, Luis, to distinguish him from his father, Jorge, he joined the Cuban military in 1952 and later played professional baseball following the revolution in 1959. In 1969, he courageously left Cuba with Zoraida and their two-year-old daughter, Greisy, beginning a new chapter rooted in hope, strength, and the promise of a better future for his family. A few years later, his son, Luis, lovingly known as Luisito, was born in 1977, bringing even more joy to their family.

After arriving in the United States, Luis worked tirelessly and selflessly to provide for those he loved, holding two jobs from 1969 through 1972. In 1972, drawing upon his military driving experience, he was hired by Pan American Construction Company, an asphalt business, as a truck driver. Through hard work, humility, and determination, he was later promoted to heavy equipment operator, a position from which he retired in 2002.

Luis will be remembered with love for his strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family, friends, colleagues and neighbors. The life he built, the sacrifices he made, and the love he gave will remain a lasting legacy in the hearts of his children, Greisy and Luis; his grandchildren, Brandon and Kenny; and his great-granddaughter, Lucia.

Family and friends are invited to gather in love and remembrance to honor and celebrate Luis’s life at a visitation to be held at Vista Funeral Home in Miami Lakes on July 9 at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at Vista Memorial at 2:30 p.m.
