Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Antonio “Tony” Magoulas on August 20, 2026, at his home in Miami Lakes, FL, at the age of 94.

Tony was born on August 19, 1932, in Manning, SC, to the late Jerry Magoulas and Pauline Peavy. Although his early years were spent in Manning, most of his youth was in Charleston, SC, where he attended Charleston High School.

Tony served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 and also served in the National Guard. In 1960, he began his career with the Federal Aviation Administration in Jacksonville, FL, but soon after transferred to San Juan, Puerto Rico. There, he spent an almost 30-year career, beginning as an air traffic controller and later serving in several positions, including Assistant Chief and Manager of Military Operations. He retired from the FAA at the end of 1987.

It was during his early years at the FAA that Tony met the love of his life, Margie, whom he married in 1965. Their marriage was a loving partnership, and Tony remained a devoted husband until Margie’s passing in 1996. He carried her memory and his love for her with him throughout the rest of his life. In 2006, Tony moved to Miami Lakes, FL, to be closer to his immediate family.

Tony is survived by his two children, Robert “Bobby” (Michele) and Maria; and his three grandchildren, Alexandra (Guillermo), Michael, and Adam. He is also survived by his older brother, Jimmy Magoulas, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Bobby and Jerry and sister Harriet.

Tony was a warm and generous man with a great sense of humor. He was kind and was always willing to help and support others. He loved good food, movies, music, and traveling, especially cruising.

There are no words to express how much he will be missed, most especially by his loving daughter Maria, who was his constant companion and tireless caregiver in his final years.

Though we grieve his passing, we are grateful for the gift of his life and for the years we were blessed to have him with us. Forever in our hearts, we look forward to the day we will be reunited in our eternal Home.

A Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Miami Lakes. His ashes will be interred in the family tomb at Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, alongside his beloved Margie.
