Jesus M. Fandino

In the early evening of Tuesday, January 19, 2021, Jesus M. Fandino, 90 passed away into
Heaven. Jesus was born on September 12, 1930 in Encrucijada de Las Villas, Cuba. His father was
Jesus Antonio Fandino Regueira (from Spain) and his mother was Genoveva Perdomo (from
Cuba). His step-mother was Reina Bonet de Fandino. Jesus was the oldest of nine children (five
brothers, three sisters). Jesus grew up in Cuba during a time of economic and political turmoil, the shadow of the
second World War and its aftermath and the booming 1950's!

Growing up, he developed a strong appetite for learning and reading, especially about history and the sciences.                                                    He honed his skills to develop into a part time journalist for a local newspaper in Cuba. Expanding his
hunger for knowledge, he made a visit to the United States in 1956 and eventually made a
permanent move to New York City in 1957. Life-changing events came in short order.

On December 5, 1959, he married Aida Iris Pagan and they honeymooned in Cuba for a month.                                                                      That would be his last visit to Cuba. They would have two children, Jesus David (1960) and Nancy Ivette (1964).                                            Jesus held varied jobs in the late 1950's. In early 1960's he took the Civil Service Exam and                                                                            began his 30 year career with the United States Postal Service rising to a supervisory position - both in New York City and
later on when he transferred to Miami, Florida United States Postal Service in 1972. As a
supervisor he was known to be well respected for his professionalism, performances and
workplace fairness and all around camaraderie. He retired from the post office in the early
1990's. Jesus was a positive, playful, dry humored soul. One would find it difficult to ever hear him
complain about anything. People can struggle about things and Jesus was not above that but,
he would always take on an obstacle, look for a solution and provide a way to move forward
positively. Jesus took his positivity and applied it to make family experiences fun and educational.                                                                        Growing up in New York City, he made sure the family had a blast going to the Hayden Planetarium,
Museum of Natural History, the Bronx Zoo and at least once a year a trip across the Hudson to
Coney Island. Holidays were special to him - Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, Rockefeller Center
Ice Skating Rink and Christmas tree lighting and even to FAO Schwartz Toy Store. In Miami it
was the County Youth Fair, Orange Bowl Parade, Three Kings Parade, Calle Ocho,
Seaquarium, Parrot and Monkey Jungles. ALL were family events.

Jesus had a passion for baseball. Playin in Cuba or following via radio; his heroes Mickey
Mantle, Stan Muscial, Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams. He played with enthusiasm and boasted
he once batted against Cuban-born and Boston Red Sox great - Luis Tiant! He either flyed or
struck out. Living in New York City we enjoyed years of going to see the NY Mets at Shea
Stadium and going to the original house that Ruth built - Old Yankee Stadium. Bat Days and
Helmet Days were different back then. Living in South Florida he welcomed Major League
baseball coming in 1993 in the Florida Marlins first year. A season ticket holder in retirement, he
experienced his team winning the 1997 World Championship. Years later, in 2017, he would
enjoy the year that he attended the 2017 All Star Game at Marlins Park as well as the full year
of Giancarlo Stanton hitting his record 59 home runs. Every game was a thriller. He made many
acquaintances and even made it on the Jumbotron a couple of times!!
There are so many things to be said about Jesus - his joking ways, his love of family, even his
little funny eccentricities : always wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants to the beach; his
collection of notes about anything and everything - the Greek alphabet, seasonal names for
hurricanes, proper spelling of nonsensical words like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. He had a
thirst for knowledge and a heart full of love for his family.

Jesus is survived by his wife of 61 years, Aida; son Jesus David; grandson Connor; daughter
Nancy Ivette (Jay son-in-law); two granddaughters; Melissa and Ashley, two great-grandsons
Silas and Joseph - plus a great-granddaughter due to arrive in July 2021.
Jesus is preceded in death by two brothers; Jose and Luis. He is survived by three brothers;
Angel, Pedro and Arturo and three sisters; Maria, Teresa and Aracelia - plus many nieces and
nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
