After losing her father at just five years old, Irene watched her mother work tirelessly to raise her daughters alone in Colombia. At 20, my mother immigrated to the United States, working two jobs to support her own mother. She rarely thought of herself because her focus was always on caring for others. She met and married my father, Raul Antonio Gomez. Their marriage lasted 61 years. She was the foundation of our family—our rock.
