On January 19, 2023, Gustavo Albistu passed away peacefully at age 91. Gustavo
was born in Havana Cuba, but proudly lived in and became a citizen of The United
States of America having exiled his native country in the early 1960's. Gustavo
was married to the love of his life, Maria L. Albistu (Torres) for 62 years. In life as
in death they were inseparable and so dad left us to be reunited with mom a
mere 3 days after Maria passed away.
Gustavo's philosophy was that you worked to live and not the other way around.
He worked for several companies including Eastern Airlines and Canteen
Corporation until his retirement at age 70.
Gustavo was a life-long fan and student of the game of baseball. He grew up a
New York Yankees fan and later in life a Miami Marlins fan. He was introduced to
American football shortly after arriving in the US, and he became a Miami
Dolphins fan dating back to the 1960's. He later became interested in college
football mainly following the FSU Seminoles and the University of Miami
Hurricanes where his daughters went to college.
His personal interests other than sports included running, music, classic movies,
travel, his many lifelong friends and his family. Gustavo was handsome, athletic,
charismatic, quick witted with a dry sense of humor. He was also a great
storyteller.
Gustavo is survived by his daughter Ercilia M. Albistu and her wife, Sally L. Phillips;
his daughter Gisela A. LoPiano and her husband Mike and their sons, Michael and
Andrew, all of whom he was fiercely proud of.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Memorial
Hospital Miramar part of Memorial Healthcare System (mhs.net). The doctors,
nurses, aides and many other professionals cared for Gustavo and Maria with
respect and compassion. Our family is eternally grateful to everyone at Memorial
Hospital Miramar who helped us navigate a very difficult situation.
