Miami Lakes

George S. Sponder passed away on October 6, 2020 at his home in Miami Lakes, FL after an extended illness. He was born in Derby, CT on August 11, 1950 to Stephen and Euphemia Jozwinski Sponder.
George grew up in Ansonia, CT and graduated from Ansonia High School in 1968.  He attended St. Francis College in Biddeford, ME and ultimately took a position teaching in the Ansonia Public School system after graduating in 1972.  George's love of travel took him to many wonderful places around the world and after several incredible journeys, he settled in Florida. He ultimately took a position as a teacher in Carol City Elementary and rose to the position of Science Coordinator which enabled him to offer in-service training to fellow educators. Yet his students were most important and endearing to him and many to this day communicated with him sharing news of their own families and life achievements.
Additionally, those who knew him recognized him as the consummate chef, master gardener, and party planner extraordinaire - a world class entertainer! His travels established friendships on multiple continents.
Left to cherish his memory are his life partner of over three decades, Diego Carbonell, his sister Irene Mlynar (Robert) of New Fairfield, CT, his sister Jacintha Sponder (Christopher) of Basel, Switzerland, nieces and nephew, Meredith(Ross) Burris, Lea Horowitz (Matthias), Dina Horowitz, Steven Mlynar (Brittany) and grandnephews and grandnieces, Benjamin and Caroline Burris, Mason, Vivienne, and Roman Mlynar, and Elias Glatthaar as well as several loving cousins and lifelong friends.
The Vista Funeral Home of Miami Lakes, FL is in charge of cremation. There will be a memorial mass at St. Joseph's Church, 36 Jewett St. in Ansonia, CT on October 27, 2020 at 10AM.  All participants will be asked to observe social distancing and to follow CoVid rules and regulations. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's name can be made to New England University of Biddeford, ME, formerly St. Francis College, his alma mater, an institution near and dear to his heart.
