Dorothy Kavinsky

KAVINSKY, Dorothy (Dottie) Glogowski, of Hialeah, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2016 at the age of 85. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and most of all a caring nurse for 62 years. Born in Natrona, PA in 1930, she overcame serious health issues to become a registered nurse. Her doctor, when hearing about young Dorothy's career plans said "banish the thought". Through faith, prayer and determination she graduated from Mount Nazareth Academy, Pittsburgh, and Ohio Valley School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse in 1951. From 1951-2012, she answered the call "when I was ill, you comforted me" (Matt 25:26), while occasionally traveling to Russia, Poland, Israel, South America and more. During her 62-year career, she worked at the VA hospitals in Pittsburgh, Mercy Hospital (Miami) and for 55 years in the Emergency Department of Hialeah Hospital. Triage was her specialty. She retired from nursing at age 82. In 2001, Dorothy received the Tenet Healthcare Corporation's Chairman's Award. This national award recognizes employees who exceed the call of duty by providing exceptional service to patients and visitors. She was one of 4 recipients selected from the 114 Tenet Hospitals across the country that year. Dottie was selected because of her unwavering commitment to treating emergency room patients and for being a devoted caregiver for over 50 years. In her spare time, she volunteered for various organizations in the community such as the Sisters of Charity (Mother Theresa's group) which feeds the homeless in Miami's inner city and Respect Life at her church, an organization which helps unwed mothers and the elderly in need of support. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Martin Kavinsky, parents Aloysius and Pearl Zbieranowski Glogowski, brother Lawrence Glogowski and sister Louise Bukowski. She is survived by her devoted children Martin Kavinsky of Hialeah, Darlene (John) Moppert of Fort Lauderdale, grandchildren, John Paul Moppert (Brooke) on assignment in Shanghai and Marisa Moppert of Fort Lauderdale, two great grandchildren, Jack and Luke Moppert, sister, Silvia (Richard) Nitowski of Natrona Heights and 11 nieces. To her friends and colleagues, she was affectionately known as Momma K. The title she most enjoyed was "Babci", Polish for grandmother. Viewing will be held at Vista Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 14200 NW 57th Avenue, Miami Lakes from 5-9 PM on Friday, January 22, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 4497 W. 1st Avenue, Hialeah at 10 AM on Saturday, January 23, 2016. Entombment will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, Doral, Florida. The family would like to thank her long time cardiologist, Dr. Rafael Ason, and the staff and physicians of Palmetto General for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Camillus House, 336 NW 5th Street, Miami, 33128 or Respect Life, Immaculate Conception Church.
