Alonso R Cabrera

October 30, 1933 — November 18, 2025

Sunny Isles Beach

Alonso R. "Ricky" Cabrera, 92, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at his daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Frank's home in Pembroke Pines, Florida where he chose to spend his last weeks. Born on October 30, 1933, in Guayos, Cuba, he lived a life marked by dedication to family, hard work, and resilience.

In 1956, at the age of 23, Alonso immigrated to the United States and settled in Tarrytown, New York. There he began building a new life with determination and purpose. In 1957 he returned to Cuba to marry the love of his life, Eli, and bring her to the US. His early years in America saw him working at the Tappan Hill Restaurant in Tarrytown before moving on to Green Valley Nursery in Hawthorne. In 1960, he began what would become a long-standing career at General Motors in North Tarrytown as an assembly line worker. He remained with the company for over three decades until early retirement in 1991. He truly accomplished the American Dream for his family. His only regret was not living to see a free Cuba and truly loved the USA.

Alonso was known affectionately as Ricky by many of his friends and family. A devoted husband and father, he shared 68 loving years of marriage with his wife Elida Rosa Cabrera. Together they raised their children with care and commitment: daughters Marilyn Cabrera Fontanello and Mirelys Cabrera He was predeceased by his beloved son James Cabrera.

Alonso is also survived by his son-in-law Frank Fontanello, Mirelys' life partner Edwin Mateo, brother Remberto Cabrera, sister-in-law Yolanda Gonzalez Cabrera, and sister Relma Corona and many nieces, nephews and friends outside of the USA. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Renelida Cabrera and Radimi Cabrera.

After retiring, Alonso and Elida relocated to Sunny Isles Beach, Florida and never looked back. Retirement brought them the joy of travel; they journeyed together several times each year until 2022 when Alonso was diagnosed with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia. Despite the challenges of treatment, he continued to embrace life fully cherishing time with loved ones and celebrating milestones with enduring spirit. Remarkably, just two weeks before his passing, he celebrated his 92nd birthday twice—a testament to his enduring zest for life.

His memory will live on through those who knew him and were touched by his strength and warmth.

May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
